The artists:
Sophie Morgan
Sophie Morgan, a Goldsmiths College student is caught in the exploration of new-found potentials. An emerging leitmotif of her work is the representation of the female body, with both Frieda Kahlo and Tracey Emin as clear influences. Never far from the surface, however, are the profound and highly personal challenges that Sophie faced whilst coming to terms with paralysis. Following a car accident which left Sophie wheelchair-bound, her work reflects the struggle faced by a young woman coming to terms with her disability, whilst fully exploiting the opportunities of her youth. In often disturbing and brazenly challenging forms, Sophie invites the viewer to share something of her experience.
Boyarde Messenger
Boyarde's subjects and style range from the quirky and observational to the meditative and more environmental. Portraiture sits alongside fashion and reportage in a critical engagement with post-feminism. Boyarde's work is guided by a sense of how, and when, to let the photograph happen. Using a series of nude portraits she explores scopophilia – the pleasure of looking. By subverting the controlling gaze, Boyarde seeks to liberate the object of desire and so strikes a careful balance between power and vulnerability. In Boyarde and her photography we see both the inquisitive and the celebratory.
David Hawson
Youthful vitality combines with a mature sensibility. David Hawson's work reflects the light and colour of his surroundings. In David's watercolours, vibrant technique reflects the landscape of his home in Scotland. Living and working in the North East of Scotland, David has increasingly been drawn to France and the Mediterranean to stimulate his palette. His style has become looser, evolving to capture a greater intensity of light and colour whilst remaining faithful to his watercolour technique which, “not only allows me to paint 'on the move', but also prevents the midges from sticking to the paint”. David has exhibited across Scotland with the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society at the Scottish Academy and The Laing Art Exhibition, amongst others.
