Who: Davide Mortoni
"We're a contemporary Italian deli in a traditional setting. We source only the best produce from Italy – tomatoes from Puglia, boat-bottled tuna from Sicily, mozzarella from Campagnia. Our bread comes from the Ticino bakery just around the corner on Bermondsey Street so it's about as fresh as you can get. As an ex-chef, I also work in collaboration with a small family-run business to create authentic sauces which we sell under the Colfiorito label. The focus is always on taste and quality. We don't use artificial flavours, colourings or preservatives – the ingredients are good enough to stand on their own.
We've only been open four months, but already our customer base is quite wide. We have local residents who visit to top up their grocery shopping with fresh salami, olives or a handy pasta sauce. Sometimes people drop by for a takeaway coffee on their way to work. We also cater for a lot of local businesses who want something a bit different for lunches or meetings. They fax us their requirements and we provide sandwiches and platters to their specifications. We're also on the verge of launching a website to sell our products to an even wider market as most of our goods aren't available in the UK at the moment."
What: A welcoming deli with a delicious range of Italian food. Every shape and size of pasta, a great selection of meat, cheese and bread. Not forgetting an exclusive range of mouth-watering pasta sauces that will bring back all those memories of Tuscan holidays in the sun.
Why: Everything that Fine Foods stock is of the highest quality and the team are super-helpful. Want to know which pasta should go with which sauce or the best way to cook a lasagne? Ask these guys and they will give you all the advice you need. You'll never want to touch a supermarket pasta sauce again after trying the Colfiorito variety (Sugo al Arrabbiata especially recommended!). No garlic excess or chemical aftertaste – just pure, home-cooked taste. It's the ideal place to pick up a quick meal for dinner or to select a few treats for a leisurely weekend lunch.
Where: Turn right at the Long Lane end of Bermondsey Street. The shop is on the corner just past the old Ship pub.
When: Monday to Friday 7.30am-8pm. Saturday 8.30am-5pm. Sunday 11am-4pm.
