It feels like you’re in London but not! Local resident Rachel Goldsack reveals why she loves living in Primrose Hill and her penchant for cupcakes.
“I’ve been in Primrose Hill since February this year. I’ve always wanted to live here. I’d come here a few times and it feels like London but isn’t really London. I feel like I’m on holiday the whole time! It’s very pleasant window-shopping. I like the fact there’s lots of independent shops. I know who my neighbours are. I feel comfortable enough to go and knock on somebody’s door.
Almost everyone seems to have a dog here! Lots of people are drawn to the Hill to watch the sunset. In the summer we cook food and take it onto the Hill for a picnic. I go running up there too, up to the top and back down again.
I’d love to eat out here more – but it’s quite pricey. Lemonia is fantastic. There’s also the Russian Tearoom, Trojka, where my old boss wooed his wife to be! The Landsdowne is a nice pub, if you can get a seat. It gets very busy. And The Engineer does a great breakfast. I live opposite Melrose & Morgan – I buy their cupcakes, they’re so yummy. Luckily they don’t deliver the cupcakes to M&M until 11am! And I’m very tempted by the ready-made meals. The bread is delicious.
I love shopping. The last thing I bought were gold flip-flops from Graham & Greene. And I’ve been eyeing up their glass coloured doorknobs for weeks. I buy cards from there as well. Though I used to make them!
Miss La La’s boutique has beautiful knickers. They’re so beautiful you don’t want to wear trousers on top. And there’s a jewellery shop just next to where I live, called Sweetpea, which seems to be undergoing a revamp.
We have a vegetable box delivered every Friday, from Able & Cole. It’s £11 and is the base for most of our meals. We try and do a food shop every week, but it doesn’t always happen! We try not to go to the supermarkets. You can also get food from Shepherd’s Food, it’s really well stocked, but quite pricey.
There’s a recycling scheme that picks up paper and glass, every Friday. I’ve also been asking the council about composting, but it seems it’s not a viable option at the moment. Food waste is predominantly what we throw away and that’s the worst thing for landfill.
I’ve been meaning to join Chalk Farm library for ages. It’s now open on Saturday so I’ll definitely join now.”
