This week the fairer sex shows the world what it's all about with a fantastic array of events to celebrate International Women’s Day.
Take the opportunity this week to transcend the boundaries that separate women the world over and join in with celebrating how far the fairer sex has come in the struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.
A national holiday in many countries, (not the UK though – sigh!),
International Women’s Day has been observed since 1910, when an International Women’s Day was proposed in Copenhagen to honour the women’s rights movement and to assist in the fight for universal suffrage. Today, the event commemorates the stories of ordinary women as makers of history and is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. History is full of impressive female movements – such as Lysistrata initiating a sexual strike against men in ancient Greece in order to end war and Parisian women marching on Versailles to demand women’s suffrage during the French Revolution.
From film screenings and comedy to creative writing events, there are all sorts of ways you can join the fun. And if you just want to gather together a group of your best girlie friends and celebrate over a delicious meal, then head to award winning pan-Asian restaurant, Cocoon, which kicked off with a traditional Hina Matsuri (Japanese Girl's Day) party last week, and is offering 50% off its new springtime menu all week. (Sushi, soft shell crab, Bento boxes and Asian-fusion delicacies starting at under £10 per head.)
