Who: Joe Mills
“I’ve been hairdressing since I was 15. Originally I wanted to do stage make-up, I was obsessed by horror movies! The BBC told me to come back when I was 21, so I started hairdressing in the meantime. Working as a Saturday boy I realised what a fantastic environment it was. I got an apprenticeship with a Dutch New Zealander, who was very focussed on precision cutting. Precision cutting is about haircuts that work after the client has left the salon, not one that just works with the salon blow-dry. By 27 I was living with my girlfriend and running a salon called Fish in Soho. Fish was the first anti-mainstream hairdressers. It was very inspirational and directional. I thought I was too cool for school! Then reaching my late twenties, I decided I could do it better! I decided to realise my dream of opening up my own shop. I didn’t want to have any pretentiousness at all. I wanted to create a space where people could come and really feel like they belonged. I didn’t want it be the type of salon where people were being rated on how cool they were. It’s all about working to what a client’s hair can do, about finding out about their background and what they do for a living, not about giving them the latest trendy cut. Fashion is purely individual. It’s how you feel as person. As hairdressers that’s what our responsibility is. We shouldn’t dominate our clientele!”
What: A very chic, but not off-puttingly so hair salon. In fact, the whole ethos is to be as welcoming and unpretentious as possible, creating a home-from-home vibe. Set over two floors, the feel of this old cobbler’s is urban chic – a New York apartment with contemporary styling. The clientele is a mix of locals, people working in media, film and music, as well as the odd city boy. Celeb clients include Elizabeth Jagger, Neve Campbell and Martin Freeman. The stylists often style hair for the pages of Another, Dazed, Arena and Wallpaper. Haircuts from £48, full head colour from £40 and highlights from £55.
Why: Check out the unique reception area providing coffee table books, magazines, cult Japanese toys, Nintendo and free WiFi. A real effort is put into providing just the right snack with healthy low GI food to order, wine, beer, fresh Illy coffee and homemade cookies. And you can book appointments online 24-hours day. Nice and easy!
When: Monday 10am-7pm. Tuesday-Friday 10am-8pm. Saturday 10am-6pm. Sunday closed.
Where: Nearest tubes are Oxford Circus and Piccadilly Circus.
