Despite all the fun and excitement, the festive season can bring on a lot of stress too. Life coach Larah Davis, tells you how to get on top of it

Whether you love it or loathe it, Christmas time is full of all sorts of obligations: ‘I ought to…’, ‘I have to…’ as well as must-haves. The expectations of family and friends and the financial pressure to buy everyone the best present, look and feel the most glamorous at all the Christmas do’s, as well as being nice as pie to the undesirable relatives around the Christmas table can get all too much.

More arguments happen on Christmas day than at any other time of year – the tensions that build up can create earth-shattering eruptions. Unless you decide to do something different.

Stress is what we feel when we are succumbing to other pressures, outside our own. Yet we are the ones who decide to take on the stress, until you realize that – just like changing from tired work clothes into to a decadent, divine dress – you can take off the stress, let it go and think and feel however you want to instead.

How do you do this?
It is a matter of choice. You can take action now to be committed to your inner and outer calm during the festive season. Start your day (every day in the run up to Christmas) by taking five minutes to read the questions and write the answers to create your desired state of body and mind.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I willing to be fully accountable for my actions and in control of my body and mind?

  • What do I want instead of being stressed? Write down your preferred state of body and mind.

  • How are the things that I am thinking and the actions that I am taking moving me towards my preferred state of body and mind?

  • What am I doing today to prioritise my inner-wellbeing and calm?

  • When was the last time that I felt really, truly calm?

  • Imagining I am there right now – what am I seeing around me, hearing and how am I feeling?

Exploring these questions will help you gain a better understanding of why you are feeling stressed and help you to achieve a calmer approach.

Wishing you a calm and clear Christmas season full of uplifting cheer!
