Aquarius
21 January - 20 February
Fixed Air Sign

The symbol for this sign is the water bearer. For this reason people often think that Aquarius is a water sign. After all ‘aqua’ is Latin for water. Yet Aquarius is a fixed air sign. The water bearer is Uranus and Uranus was a sky god. As such he provided something vital for life, rain. Likewise, Aquarius provides something vital for the world, ideas on how to improve life for all. Their instinct is egalitarian and radical in nature. This means that for this sign, ideas are extremely important. Aquarians will have ideas about how to make the world a better place. They often seem to others to be unconventional or alternative to the norm. Sometimes Aquarians feel that they are ahead of their time; that they get an idea and ten years later everyone else now seems to think that this idea should be the norm. Quite simply, Aquarians are often ahead of their time.

Given that it takes the rest of society a while to catch up with them, it means that what Aquarians need is a great deal of patience. This however, is in short supply. Aquarians usually believe that their ideas are the right way to go about doing things and are in no mood to compromise. After all, if you can picture Utopia would you want to sully it by giving in to messy things like emotions. Aquarians are idealists, they have vision and so believe that they must stick to their ideas at all costs.

An unwillingness to compromise on ideals means that many become revolutionaries. You may find them as Union leaders or leading environmental protests. They may even join communes. Another key point is that Aquarians tend to join groups or societies which have as their aim, the improvement of society in some way. Quite rightly they realise that many voices joined in unison are more powerful and able to effect change than one lone voice.

The aim of Aquarius is often to shake the status quo. Even if they are not very politically motivated or actively trying to change the world, they will be very humanitarian in their outlook. They usually have a wild sense of humour and enjoy shocking people with it, as nothing is off limits. The aim is not to offend but to challenge sensibilities, beliefs, the norm.

Given this impulse to be outside the norm often means that Aquarians are attracted to ‘alternative’ ways of living. They are often interested in ‘alternative therapies’ or all things ‘New Age’. This is the spiritual element of the sign. The ideal of the brotherhood of man stretches to the idea that we are all connected spiritually as well.

You may find Aquarians working in advertising, fashion, think tanks, or any field which influences social trends and focuses on the future. These are natural communicators and thrive in fields where ideas are continually bounced around and mass communication is required.

The future is also greatly influenced by technology and this is another field associated with Aquarius. Computers and the internet started to play a large part in our lives when Uranus the planet of revolution and ruler of Aquarius was in its own sign of Aquarius. This means that many Aquarians are very much at home with technology.

There is an electric quality to this somewhat rebellious sign. They like to do things their way but they can be utterly charming and persuasive. Their energy tends to be positive if at times dictatorial. Their idealism suggests a romantic view of the world and how it might be. With Valentine’s coming up, perhaps we ought to be thinking more about brotherly love than romance. Then we could all be living up to this sign’s idealism and working on making the world an altogether better place.
