24 August – 24 September
Mutable Earth Sign

September has a flavour all of its own. It has that back to work flavour with the summer holidays being over and the new school year beginning. The harvest period which began in August continues, with harvest festivals taking place all over the country. It’s easy to see why, with berries of all kinds abounding in bushes and fruit trees sagging under their loads. These are all important images to keep in mind when we think of the sign of Virgo, as what unites the harvest and the beginning of the academic year is work. The frivolity of summer under the sign of Leo has passed and as we try to hang on to the last vestiges of summer, our minds turn to more serious matters, for this is a serious sign. We are mindful of the coming change of season and begin to prepare for autumn.

The symbol for Virgo is the Maiden. In ancient cultures, the Maiden was a sort of short-hand for purity and perfection. If you are a Virgo then you will appreciate just how true this is. Of all the signs of the Zodiac, Virgo is most concerned with perfection. This means that being organised is important, so you will spend a great deal of time making lists and ensuring that your day runs efficiently. Routine is important because it ensures that all the items on the ‘to do list’ are ticked.

Being concerned with perfection also means having an eye for detail. This makes Virgos good analysts and good critics. Both have their positive and negative points. If you need someone to analyse data or a report then you will do no better than to have a Virgo help you. Virgos are also the right people to help you organise your office or your home. If your cleaner is a Virgo, you are likely to benefit from their eye for detail.

But Virgos can also get themselves into trouble with their honesty. That sense of detail means that little things matter and so others may perceive them as critical. If a Virgo points out that you have missed something in your work, then they are trying to help you. They are offering you advice which will help you achieve perfection. You, on the other hand, may just hear it as criticism. Virgo could do with a bit of tact. Empathy is not always their strong point. In their quest for purity they are always truthful and the truth can be thorny.

Yet this is not a cold, uncaring sign. Virgo is an earth sign so the means by which they express love and affection are practical. If you want flowers and poems, perhaps you need a Pisces. A Virgo’s love is expressed by doing those little things which will make your life easier. They may help you organise your morning routine so that you aren’t arriving at work stressed or late. They are often interested in crafts so they might knit you a jumper, or make you a glass mosaic because they now you are re-decorating your house and thought you needed something colourful to brighten your hallway. Virgos are often very health conscious and so they may also express their love by making sure that you are having your daily quota of fruit and vegetables.

With so much emphasis on perfection and work, life can become quite stressful. Virgos are worriers and their health can suffer due to too much stress. Very often they find that stress affects their ability to digest. Most are very much in tune with their bodies and so will know that on these occasions they need to watch what they eat. Many Virgos are quite fussy about food. Either they feel that certain foods don’t agree with them or they are simply interested in eating a healthy diet.

What Virgo needs is time to play and for Virgos, creative activities or exercise routines like Yoga are perfect. The first allows them to put their eye for detail to good use while the latter allows them to stretch their muscles and release tension.

Finally, being a mutable sign, Virgos are extremely curious and easily bored. Keeping the mind stimulated by taking part in evening courses can also help because it keeps the mind busy and away from worrying. Not all Virgos enjoy crafts, so there needs to be another outlet for creativity. Many enjoy writing, so doing a creative writing course may be just the thing. This is exactly the right time of year to do this, so get organised and enjoy it.
